Your share of the national debt: $88,433.73

The US federal debt represents money borrowed by the federal government in order to finance deficit spending. Every Tuesday and Thursday, the US Treasury holds an auction to issue new debt in order to pay off existing debt which is maturing and to fund additional spending. The last time the government managed to reduce the debt with a surplus was in 1991.

Generally, the national debt is broken into debt held by the public and intragovernmental transfers. Your share of the national debt represents only that debt which is held by the public. According to the Peter G Peterson Foundation, approximately 70% of the debt is held by US entities.

The total debt held by the public is $30.1 trillion and the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was $29.2 trillion in fiscal year 2024 (starting October 1, 2023). The credit rating of the US Government has been downgraded by all of the major ratings agencies due to the seeming inability to reign in the deficit.

The 2025 estimated deficit will be $1.8 trillion, which represents $5,256 per person in the US. That figure is expected to increase in the future.
